How do I Confirm that My Glass Is Tempered Safety Glass?

This safety glass is produced using a slower cooling process, and its strength and safety are much higher than standard glass. As tempered glass has a high heat resistance and damage resistance, it is widely favored in the construction and installation of windows. It is also commonly used in aquariums and tabletops as well as protective glasses for divers and mechanics.

To the untrained person, the toughened glass looks the same as any type of glass. In order to identify it, many people will jokingly say: "W! If it is broken into small, bite-sized pieces, then it must have been ground." But seriously, how do you judge whether the glass has been tempered? (No hammer involved)?

Below, we provide you with a less destructive way to determine whether your glass is hard.

Check its edges

Generally, tempered glass has completely smooth edges due to additional processing, while other types of glass usually have scratched or raised edges.

If the edges of the glass are exposed, slide your fingers along them. If the roughness is not caused by abrasion, any rough impression may mean that the glass is not tempered.
Watch out for errors

We don’t mean the insect. In the construction industry, bugs are tiny tags etched or sandblasted on the corners of the glass. This mark, together with the manufacturer's name and CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) standards, indicates whether the glass has been tempered.

If you get the glass directly from the manufacturer, you can easily see the mark. But this is not always the case, especially when the glass frame hides the seal. Therefore, you must beware of other clues.

Looking for flaws

If you find any warpage, bend, or depression on the glass, it is most likely tempered glass. These defects usually occur during heating. Because glass is exposed to extremely high heat, the pliers used to carry the glass usually leave a slight mark on the surface, which can be recognized if you look close enough.

Certain tempered glass may also have surface scratches, usually caused by small particles that melt in the machine roll and fuse to its surface. In the normal cleaning process, this residual debris will be dragged, resulting in slight scratches.

View glass through the polarizer

If you try to view toughened safety glass with polarized sunglasses in the sun, you will see dark, shaded dots or lines extending on its surface-this is the main indicator that the glass is hardened. These lines are formed by steel rollers in the tempering process.

Draw a line (only if you plan to cut it off)

If all other methods fail, consider using a window cutting tool to draw a line on the glass surface. If it produces uneven and scaly lines, it should be adjusted. If you plan to cut glass, please bring it to an expert so that you can cut the glass without cracking or chipping.
